O’s acquire Darwinzon Hernandez from Red Sox

The Baltimore Orioles have acquired 26-year-old left-handed pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for cash considerations.

Hernandez is a 2013 amateur free agent signee out of Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela. He made his major league debut on April 23, 2019, at the age of 22, and has predominantly been a bullpen arm throughout his time in the big leagues.

In four total years, Hernandez is 3-4 with a 5.06 ERA in 85.1 innings pitched, 91 total games, starting just one game. He has given up 75 total hits and 48 earned runs and has walked 73 batters and struck out 133 in his career.

Left-handers have slashed .178/.347/.297 against Hernandez in the majors, and right-handers have hit .262/.412/.418. He’s made seven appearances against the Orioles and has allowed two runs with 16 strikeouts in eight innings.

Hernandez was designated for assignment by Boston on January 6 to make room for former All-Star third baseman and recent signee, Justin Turner.

To make room for Hernandez on the 40-man roster, Baltimore has designated 26-year-old first baseman Lewin Díaz for assignment (again). This is the second time Baltimore has DFA’d Díaz and the fourth time in the last two months he has been DFA’d.

The Orioles’ 40-man roster is now full.
