2022 Delmarva Shorebirds Season Recap

It is time to say goodbye to the 2022 Delmarva Shorebirds. A team that record-wise did not perform that well but gave us entertainment day in and day out.

Delmarva finished the season 49-81, which is last in not only the division but the entire Carolina League. They finish the season with a -232 run differential and with a three-game winning streak.

Throughout the season, we saw many players perform for the Shorebirds. But only one player surpassed 100 total games played as a Shorebird.

Third baseman Noelberth Romero, 20, performed in the most games with 104. Luis Valdez, 22, was the only player to surpass 100 hits and surpass 20+ stolen bases with 59 total.

We also got to see many 2022 MLB draftees perform at Delmarva with spectacular debuts.

First overall pick Jackson Holliday, 18, had four doubles and six RBIs in his time with Delmarva. Jud “The Stud” Fabian, 21, had seven doubles, two triples and three home runs in his time with Delmarva.

While the hitting side of things was solid, the pitching was not as good. The lowest ERA of players who surpassed double-digit games was 22-year-old Hugo Beltran with a 2.58 ERA.

Only one pitcher that started 10 or more games had a winning record, and that was 22-year-old Ryan Long, who ended the year with a 7-5 record.

In 130 games that Delmarva played, the team slashed .238/.335/.345 with a .680 OPS. They had 1036 total hits, 197 doubles, 31 triples and 68 home runs, while the pitching had a league-worst 5.41 ERA. The staff put together two shutouts and went 23/38 in saves.

To end off the season, let’s finish on a positive and sappy note. First, as fans, we need to thank manager Felipe Alou Jr. and his coaching staff for all they did this season with this team.

Next, a little stat for us fans. Over 62 games plus two doubleheaders, 64 in total, 136,815 fans spent their summer at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, averaging around 2,137 fans per game.

I loved writing about the Delmarva Shorebirds in the time I had this season. I hope that us as a Birdland Community are ready for some 2023 Delmarva Shorebirds baseball, with even more memories made.
