In a season that has seen plenty of call-ups for the Baltimore Orioles, we can add another to the list.
This time, it is Terrin Vavra, a second base prospect currently ranked No. 12 on the Orioles’ top-30 list.
This call-up is in light of an injury Jonathan Araúz suffered while sliding into second base in Monday’s contest against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Araúz has been placed on the 10-day IL, and Vavra’s contract has been selected to replace him on the big league roster. However, do not be surprised to see Araúz possibly designated for assignment once he is ready to return.
This year in Norfolk, Vavra has been lighting it up, as he holds a slash line of .324/.435/.451 with an OPS of .886. In his 45 games at Triple-A, Vavra has hit safely 56 times with 14 doubles and 28 walks.
Defensively, Vavra is immediately the best second baseman on the Orioles roster. With Rougned Odor struggling at the plate as the O’s main second baseman, it is expected that his playing time may drop off, as he has been trying to doctor up a .199 batting average and 0.1 bWAR.
For Tuesday’s game, Vavra is not in the lineup, as it was reported by Orioles manager Brandon Hyde that he may not be able to join the team until later Tuesday evening.
When Vavra does debut, it is assumed he will be playing second base, and he will be sporting No. 77. His first appearance will be his major league debut.
This is one Birdland should be excited about. Vavra is an extremely exciting infield prospect, who has shown an incredible amount of promise.
Welcome to The Show, Terrin!
