Most Orioles fans know Adley Rutschman as the top prospect in all of baseball and Grayson Rodriguez as the top pitching prospect. They are the battery of the future for the Orioles, who hold high expectations to go along with the massive fan fair that is following their rise to stardom.
What many don’t know is that both are extremely exceptional athletes who have turned heads with the ability they exude in their young lifetime.
Recently, Rodriguez showed off some gridiron skills, as the young righty posted a video of himself kicking a 43-yard field goal.
OK, I get it. That’s not too bad, but what would you say if I told you the field goal was kicked left-footed and not with the natural right-footed? Seems like an amazing feat, or shall I say “foot” for what has blossomed into the young phenom’s rise through the minors.
For the 2021 season, Gray-Rod posted a 6-1 record with a 2.60 ERA in 18 starts at Double-A Bowie. The young fire-baller holds a fastball that touches triple digits and helped to bring on the fan favorite gas cans showing up on game day.
Not to be out done in all worlds, athlete Adley Rutschman has his own pedigree on the gridiron as well. As an Oregon high school player, Adley set the state record for longest field goal in 2015. As a senior that year, he kicked what would be one of the longest in the NFL, a 63-yard field goal. Even Justin Tucker has to turn a head!
Adley played running back, linebacker and kicker as a high school prep. He earned First Team All State as a kicker and a Second Team All State as a linebacker his senior prep season.
Rutschman didn’t stop there, becoming a place kicker at Oregon State, where he has an impressive career as well. He averaged 59.5 yards per kickoff on 54 total, while also recording 20 touchbacks. Rutschman also converted 2-of-3 onside kicks, even recovering one himself.
Though he did not have any point attempt or field goal tries in college, he did record three tackles, two of them solo, during his collegiate career.
Although we as Orioles fans are happy that Rodriguez and Rutschman have excelled in baseball, it’s nice to know our NFL brethren, the Baltimore Ravens, need only to look in their own back yard to find kicker help in a pinch (kidding). While we look forward to seeing them on the diamond, we can be thankful to know we have true athletes performing for our team.
Our battery sure can kick some…. well, let’s just say it’s on the diamond for the Orioles.
