Yet again, another monthly award goes to a member of the Orioles organization!
For the month of July, O’s No. 7 prospect, Michael Baumann, has been named the Double-A Northeast Pitcher of the Month! Throughout July with Double-A Bowie, Baumann was electric. The young righty prospect proved why that prospect rank is deserved.
Through four starts, Baumann was unhittable. He went 3-0 in that stretch and only let opposing teams hit .169 against him. That’s outstanding! With only four walks allowed as well, Baumann was fantastic at keeping people off the base paths all month.
In those four games, he allowed just 13 hits, with one being a home run. He also struck out at least five batters in each of those four starts, with eight on July 16; that was his season high.
For someone who has battled injuries this season, this is great to see! Baumann has actually been promoted to Triple-A Norfolk, where he has appeared in one game so far. His one Triple-A start lasted five innings with just two runs allowed, which is keeping pace with his amazing July in Double-A.
Baumann appeared set to start the 2021 season with Triple-A Norfolk, but tendinitis slowed his debut. The former third-round pick started the year with a pair of rehab starts at Delmarva, before moving to Bowie in late May.
After a horrendous June, Baumann has seemed to figure it out and really started showing why the Orioles keep him in high regards. He tossed at least five innings in every start he made during the month, striking 26 batters to those four walks mentioned earlier.
Baumann projects to make his big league debut later this season, but don’t be surprised if we don’t see him wearing orange and black until 2022.
