O’s trade SS Freddy Galvis to Phillies for RHP Tyler Burch

In a day that everyone expected Paul Fry, Tanner Scott, and maybe Trey Mancini to be donning new colors, the big news of the day was Freddy Galvis getting traded to where he begin his career, the Philadelphia Phillies.

Currently on the I.L. and progressing towards an early August return, Galvis will be heading back to the Phillies in return for minor league right-hander, Tyler Burch. The Orioles will also be sending Galvis a $250,000 bonus for being traded as part of his contractual agreement.

Known for his leadership in the clubhouse and on the field teaching younger players, Galvis left a lasting impression on Oriole fans before his quad injury. Right before his injury, Galvis was one of the hottest hitters on the Orioles. He finishes his Orioles career batting .249 with nine home runs and 26 RBI.

In the field, he was just as impressive, with a .984 fielding position, helping turn 18 double plays on the season. As the field general and playing one of the most demanding positions, Galvis showed why he was a former All-Star and why the Orioles took a chance on him.

The Phillies will send 24-year-old Tyler Burch to the Orioles. Recently promoted to High-A, the young righty pitcher has pitched to a 2.45 ERA with a 0.818 WHIP over eight relief appearances. He has 18 strikeouts across 11 innings since his promotion. On the season, he has 23 appearances with a 3.99 ERA. What stands out the most is that across 29.1 innings, he has 49 strikeouts and a WHIP that is a valuable 1.090.

In a turn of unexpected deals, this trade benefits both teams, as the Orioles pick up a relief pitcher, who is young, is under team control, and has a power fastball with decent secondary pitches. The Phillies in return get a leader on and off the field, with a proven track record and is familiar with the organization. For the Orioles’ rebuild, it fits into their plans, as they build towards a strong championship team.

Thank you for an amazing showing in Birdland, Freddy! And welcome to Birdland, Tyler!
