Time for some more inter-league play! A few days after essentially ending the Nationals’ playoff hopes, the Orioles are set to take on another NL East opponent, the Miami Marlins.
On the mound this series for the Orioles will be Spenser Watkins in game one and Jorge López in game two. Opposite of them will be Sandy Alcantara in game one and a to be determined starter for game two.
Spenser Watkins will be something to watch Tuesday night, as he starts his fourth Major League game. So far in 16.1 IP, Watkins has been electric for the Orioles, while coming out of no where. He will face a lineup that is predominantly right-handed. It will be a tough task for Watkins but one we’re sure he can handle.
The offense is coming off an electric series sweep of the Nationals that ended in a walk-off in game three. The Birds look to continue that offensive momentum, especially after an off day.
To take a series win here, we need to see production for our X-factors!
The first X-factor is the combination of Cedric Mullins and Austin Hays. We, as fans, have seen their friendship develop. On the field, that’s no different. Both players have become bats that succeed against the off-speed and can hit it with power. Going against a guy like Alcantara, who mixes off his sinker very well with his changeup, expect these two to lead the offense.
The second X-factor for this series is the bullpen combination of Paul Fry, Tanner Scott, and Dillon Tate. Between those three, a decent bit of ball games have been won in the last few weeks. Also, with the trade deadline on the horizon, Fry and Scott will certainly be showcased. However, for the time being, their ability to get strikeouts in high leverage situations will be key. The Marlins have a handful of powerful bats, and keeping the ball down and off the barrel late in the game in a park like OPACY is essential.
