The Norfolk Tides announced their schedule today for the 2021 season in the newly created Triple-A East League. Games are set to start on April 6, with the home opener set for April 13 at Harbor Park.
The Tides will not compete in the International League for the first time since 1968. Norfolk will play against Durham, Charlotte, Gwinnett, Jacksonville, Memphis, and Nashville. Matchups in this league will consist almost entirely of six-game series from Tuesday to Sunday, with Mondays off for travel.
A big part of the new divisional setup is limiting travel and regionalizing Triple-A baseball.
Norfolk has not seen action at Harbor Park since the 2019 season, a year highlighted by Ryan Mountcastle’s International League MVP Award. After a year off due to COVID-19, various complications will need to be addressed such as advertising and in-person attendance.
Norfolk’s schedule consists of 72 home games at Harbor Park and 70 games on the road. Some familiar divisional rivals from the obsolete International League remain in the Southeast Divsion: Charlotte Knights (White Sox), Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays), and Gwinnett Stripers (Atlanta Braves). However, fans will have to get used to some new team names playing at Harbor Park this season: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Miami Marlins), Memphis Redbirds (St. Louis Cardinals), and Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers).
While the new divisional setup might take a little getting used to, Tides fans will be excited for baseball to return at Harbor Park this spring.
