We are back again on Prospect Profiles, this time highlighting one of the newer Baby Birds, 19-year-old third baseman Coby Mayo.
HITTING GRADES: Hit 45 Run 40 Field 45 Power 55 Arm 65 Overall 45
2020 Rank: N/A – 2021 Rank: 16
Coby Mayo was drafted out of high school in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. Playing third base at the infamous Majory Stoneman Douglass High School in Florida, Mayo was nothing short of a stud. After 65 high school games, Mayo accumulated a final .389 batting average with a .541 on base average. That’s eye opening.
Coming out of high school, scouts report that Mayo is a huge power hitter with hard hitting potential. He’s someone who is a below average runner but is smart on the base paths. He also had a strong arm and solid glove that can work at third base in the future.
Originally a college commit to the University of Florida, Mayo decided to start his career early and signed with the Orioles following being drafted. He hopes to achieve the greatness of a couple other alumni of his high school, people like Anthony Rizzo and Jesús Luzardo.
Unfortunately for Mayo, the lack of a minor league season has made it so he has yet to make his professional debut. However, we have no reason to believe he won’t open some eyes this season. Coming in at six-foot-five and 215 pounds, no one would ever guess this kid is only 19 years old.
