The Birds are flying high coming into this afternoon’s game against the Phillies, after taking the first two games in exciting fashion in Philadelphia.
At 4:05 p.m., the Orioles send Thomas Eshelman (0-0, 3.68 ERA) to the mound for his second start of the season. Oriole batters will face off against former Oriole Jake Arrieta (1-1, 2.45 ERA).
Eshelman has appeared in two games this year, entering in the sixth inning against the Marlins August 4 and starting against the Nationals August 8.
The 6-foot-3, 26-year-old has pitched 7.1 innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out three. In his career, left-handed batters hit .254 against Eshelman, while right-handers hit .336.
Eshelman was drafted in the second round of the 2015 draft by the Houston Astros out of Cal State Fullerton. In 2017, Eshelman was named 2017 Phillies Minor League Player of the Year.
A former fifth round pick of the Orioles in 2007, Arrieta struggled mightily with the team before being traded to the Cubs in 2013.
Of course, Orioles fans are well aware of what happened next, as Arrieta went on to become an All-Star and won the Cy Young award in 2015. Since joining the Phillies in 2018, Arrieta has struggled to find the same success that he had in Chicago.
Arrieta has, however, gotten off to a great start in 2020. On the season, Arrieta has started two games, going 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 11 innings. Left-handed batters bat 21 points higher against him and slug 115 points higher. Current Orioles bat .200 against Arrieta in 15 at-bats.
Arrieta’s struggles against lefties, along with Chris Davis’ career success against him (3-7), really tell you all that you need to know about Davis being benched during today’s game.
