Prospect Profiles: No. 1 Adley Rutschman

To finally conclude The Baltimore Battery’s top 30 Oriole prospects is the first overall pick in the 2019 draft, catcher Adley Rutschman.

Weighing in at 216 pounds and standing at 6 foot 2 inches, Adley Rutschman is the complete package. Coming into the 2019 draft, Rutschman was said to be the best draft prospect since Bryce Harper.

After finishing high school at Sherwood High school in Oregon, Rutschman was drafted in the 40th round of the 2016 draft by the Seattle Mariners. Luckily for Oriole fans, Rutschman elected to go to college at Oregon State University.

In his three seasons at OSU, Adley Rutchman showed he made the right choice by attending college.

I’m his freshman year, Adley ended the year with an average of .234 in 61 games. This included 49 hits, seven of them being doubles, one triple, and two home runs.

By the end of his second season at OSU, Rutschman was force to be reckoned with. He ended his 2018 campaign with a whopping .408 average, with an OPS of 1.13. An incredibly productive year at the plate for Adley saw 102 hits, with 22 doubles, 3 triples and 9 home runs. Rutschman also drew 53 walks with 83 RBIs. His dominance in 2018 helped lead the Oregon State Beavers to a College World Series Championship.

2019 saw even more production from Rutschman. In 57 games, he ended with a phenomenal .411 batting average, with a 1.32 OPS fueled by 76 hits, 17 HRs, 10 doubles, 58 RBIs, and 76 walks. That’s 139 total bases in just under 60 games. It’s no wonder as to why the Orioles saw Adley Rutschman fit to be the first overall pick.

Dominating in Aberdeen for 20 games, Adley was moved to single A Delmarva following a .325 average and 15 RBIs in those games. After 12 games with the shorebirds Rutschman finished the season with a .154 average in 12 games, with 8 RBIs and 2 home runs.

Adley Rutschman received an invitation to join the major league club at spring training in Sarasota, Florida.

Undoubtedly, Adley Rutschman is the most anticipated prospect in Orioles memory. The forefront of the Orioles minor league system that jumped up to the top 10 after years of being at the bottom. the future for Adley Rutschman in Baltimore is beyond bright, and this is only the beginning.
