Monday Thoughts: Edition 4

Week of January 27, 2020:

Welcome to this next edition of Monday Thoughts! We are just two weeks away from pitchers and catchers reporting to Sarasota! So without further ado, let’s talk!

Adley makes MLB Pipeline’s Top 5 Prospects rankings:

During the last few weeks, MLB Pipeline has counted down the top 100 prospects in baseball heading into the 2020 season. And sure enough, Adley Rutschman was ranked at No. 4.

According to Jim Callis, senior writer for MLB Pipeline, Rutschman is compared to Mark Teixeira at the plate and has Gold-Glove-caliber defense, along with an “off the charts” baseball IQ.

The No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft has certainly caught the eye of many scouts. After playing with both Low-A Aberdeen and Single-A Delmarva last season, Rutschman has even been invited to spring training.

Although he won’t make the big league team in 2020, Rutschman will get some key time with fellow major leaguers and have at-bats against big league pitchers.

Just think folks. We are two seasons away from seeing this young man at Camden Yards. If that doesn’t excite you, I don’t know what does.

Yusniel Diaz situation:

Yusniel Diaz was once a top 100 prospect in the game, but due to an injury-filled year, he has slipped in the rankings.

As the Orioles’ No. 5 overall prospect, we are guaranteed to see a lot of Diaz during spring training. He’s ultimately destined to start the year in Triple-A Norfolk, however.

So how can this young man get to the majors? He needs to show that he can stay healthy and hit the ball. I’ve always thought that Diaz would be more of a DH instead of an every day outfielder, but the O’s are looking more towards his bat than his glove.

I think that we’ll see Diaz at Camden Yards this season, with hopes of success at the Triple-A level.

Delmarva Shorebirds promotional schedule:

For those of you who don’t know, I live on the Eastern Shore, which happens to be where the Delmarva Shorebirds play.

Just last week, the Shorebirds announced their 2020 promotional schedule. Some of the key items are a Trey Mancini Jedi Bobblehead for May 4, a Shorebirds-themed Hawaiian Shirt giveaway, and an Adley Rutschman Bobblehead night.

The team will also host theme nights at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, such as Harry Potter Night and Beatles Night.

For all the promotion dates, go to the Shorebirds website.

Anyways folks, that’s going to be it for Monday Thoughts! Make sure to come back every Monday for more articles!
