On Sunday, The Baltimore Orioles added a potential rotation piece signing right-handed pitcher Kohl Stewart to a Major League contract for 2020.
Stewart, a number four overall pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2013, will earn $800,000 if he makes the Major League club, however, the Orioles have structured his contract to allow him to be optioned to the minors if the team chooses to.
Kohl has appeared in 17 Major League games for the Twins posting a 4.79 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 62 innings. The twenty-five year old pitch 91 innings in Triple A last season striking out 80 and sporting a 5.14 ERA. Stewart primarily uses his 92 mph fastball and slider.
The Orioles are hoping to reduce Stewart’s walk rate, 3.8 per nine innings, and hope that he rediscovers the stuff that made him a huge prospect coming out of St. Pius X High School in Texas.
In a corresponding move, the Orioles have designated Marco Diplan for assignment.
