Following multiple moves by the Orioles in the first couple days of this past week, Mike Elias made another move, this time hiring former Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves manager, Fredi González, as a major league coach.
González comes to Baltimore following his third stint on the Marlins coaching staff. Previously, González was the manager of the Marlins from 2007-2010 and also a coach from 1999-2001 and 2017-2019. González also managed the Atlanta Braves from 2011-2016.
Mike Elias fills another hole in the long list of needed hires among the Orioles coaching staff, and González is a good guy to have in the dugout. He has a 710-692 record as a manager and has been around the league, both as a player and a coach, for many years.
Accompanying Anthony Sanders as the most recent coaching positions filled, there are still more spots to be filled. González takes the place formerly held by José Hernàndez, who moves to assistant hitting coach.
In a winter that has had a surprisingly good number of transactions so far, it is clear to see that Mike Elias is focused on his rebuilding goal that he has paved the way for.
