Starting in 2020, the Baltimore Orioles are moving the start of home games before memorial day and after labor day, to 6:35 PM ET, as said by Steve Melewski of masnsports.
This is a move by the Orioles that finally has the fan in mind. As everyone knows attendance at Camden Yards is at an all-time low. 2019 saw a 16% decrease in attendance over the whole season as compared to 2018. With sub par play on the field, the Orioles executives are on the right path to helping fix the attendance problem.
The 6:35 PM start time does help many families attend more games. This earlier start time in addition to the Kids Cheer Free promotion, where kids ages 9 and under get in for free with the purchase of an upper deck seat, will make an impact on attendance. Oriole Park at Camden Yards has always been famous for its family atmosphere, and that just got better.
Along with the earlier start time and Kids Cheer Free promotion, the Orioles have many other ways to bring fun to the ballpark. One of my old favorites, the “Kid’s Corner” still stands as the coolest Orioles themed playground around. With the best valued concession stands in the MLB in the Kids Corner makes bringing the little ones to OPACY much more affordable.
Another old favorite, kids run the bases, still stands as well. After Sunday games, kids have the chance to run the same bases they just watched their favorite players run around. This has to be one of the coolest promotions the Orioles have, and I hope it doesn’t end any time soon.
With the new front office and a full rebuild in swing, we can expect to see more of these kinds of changes as well as player changes. With hopes of bringing the love for the Orioles back into the heart of Baltimore, Mike Elias and his crew are on a good path with the time changes.
