The Baltimore Orioles have announced that outfielder Mason Williams has elected to enter free agency, after declining an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk.
Williams was one of the best hitters at Triple-A Norfolk during the 2019 season, batting .308/.371/.477 with 18 homers and 67 RBI in 121 games. The 28-year-old played in just 11 games with the major league club, after being called up in September. In his 34 plate appearances, Williams batted .267/.324/.300 with just two RBI.
The Orioles acquired Williams from the Cincinnati Reds in late March for outfield depth in the minors. Being 28 years old and not having much experience in the major leagues, the once highly-touted prospect decided to test his luck on the free agent market, in hopes to earn some playing time with another team at the major league level.
We’d like to thank Mason Williams for his contributions to the Orioles!
