With the offseason just starting for the Baltimore Orioles, General Manager Mike Elias has already been a busy man. It has been announced that assistant hitting coach Howie Clark, bullpen coach John Wasdin, and first base coach/outfield instructor Arnie Beyeler have been dismissed from their duties.
Howie Clark is the last layover from the Buck Showalter regime. Clark spent time in the Orioles farm system as a coach in 2015 and 2016, before he was promoted to the assistant hitting coach in 2017.
Arnie Beyeler, who was busy this season helping craft the young new outfield, has also been let go. Beyeler served as the third base coach on the 2013-15 Boston Red Sox, helping win a World Championship there. Beyeler was hired following there seasons as a coach in the Marlins minor league system.
The third firing is of bullpen coach John Wasdin. Wasdin survived one season in Baltimore, where he wasn’t able to offer much help to one of the league’s worst bullpens. Before this season, former major league pitcher Wasdin was the Orioles minor league pitching coordinator.
Despite uncertainty in who will fill these new open positions, I think Elias will find the best people for the job. As we can expect, more firings will occur as this offseason progresses, and we are anxious to see how it all plays out.
