Austin Hays has took Major League Baseball by storm, since being called up from Triple-A Norfolk September 7.
The 24-year-old center fielder has certainly opened some eyes, not just in the Baltimore but around the entire league with both his bat and his glove.
Since being called up to join the major league club for the September roster extensions, Hays has batted an incredible .309/.373/.574 in 21 games played.
Hays has also hit 4 home runs and tallied 13 RBI in his short stint with the Orioles this season, but his bat isn’t the only asset this up-and-coming star possesses.
Hays’ defense is what really put him on the map. From robbing home runs to amazing diving catches, Hays has electrified our eyes with his “Superman-like” plays in the outfield.
It was the play on September 19, that put “Willie Mays Hays” on every baseball fan’s radar.
A ball hit by another up-and-coming superstar, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., was traveling towards center field. It was sure to be a home run, but Hays made an unbelievable leap to snag the ball from going over the wall!
Hays’ reaction is what made this play even more special. Not only was this the best play of the year for the Orioles, it is also considered to be one of the top plays of the year in all of baseball!
But Hays’ incredible defense would not end there! Here are a few more amazing plays that Hays made this season:
Hays finished the 2019 season with a fielding percentage of 1.000, which is the best possible number you can achieve. It’s amazing what this young stud can do in the field.
Hays was supposed to play in the Arizona Fall League after the conclusion of the regular season, but he has performed so well and collected enough at-bats to have the Orioles change their minds and reverse that decision.
Hays looks to be the next best thing in baseball. He has the defensive excitement of Kevin Kiermaier and the offensive capabilities of George Springer. His style of play is infectious and makes everyone watching become a fan.
The Orioles have found their spark, and we all hope Austin Hays will man center field for many years to come at Oriole Park at Camden Yards!
