O’s find third catching option, claim Drew Romo off waivers from Colorado

The Baltimore Orioles have claimed 24-year-old switch-hitting catcher Drew Romo off waivers from the Colorado Rockies.

Romo, the Rockies former No. 9 overall prospect at the end of the 2024 season, will be a solid depth piece for the O’s behind the dish.

In 54 career at-bats, Romo has not faired too well at the plate, with a .167 average, although it is a small sample size.

For a team that is in the position it is, it is curious why Colorado would cut ties with a prospect who, if nothing else, could have netted the organization some kind of return, as opposed to designating him for assignment.

Romo is slated to be the Orioles’ third-string catcher, who could certainly come into play frequently throughout the season. Birdland saw last year how badly depth is needed at the major league level, especially at the catching position.

This claim is intriguing because it not only gives the O’s a third catching option but also allows manager Craig Albernaz to use Samuel Basallo in different ways.

Basallo’s one flaw coming through the system was regarding his health when catching regularly. Now, you are able to keep Basallo’s bat in the lineup every day while not needing to abuse him behind the plate, and in turn, helps Adley Rutschman in the same way.

Romo is still so young that there is a lot of ceiling for him. After only 54 career at-bats, it is really not fair to judge the offensive production, especially when you consider the level of coaching he had around him in Colorado.

As a prospect, Romo grades at 60 in both fielding and arm, which is fantastic for a catcher. You really can never have a bad deal with a catcher who is that solid behind the dish as a third option.

The Orioles also claimed outfielder Will Robertson off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. To make room on the 40-man roster, the O’s designated first baseman/outfielder Ryan Noda for assignment.
