The MLB offseason entered the first big milestone on the calendar, Rule 5 protection day.
At 6 p.m. EST on Tuesday, the Baltimore Orioles needed to decide whether to protect players who are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft, which takes place on December 10 during the winter meetings in Orlando.
In order to prevent a player from being Rule 5 eligible, an organization must add them to its 40-man roster. The Orioles chose to add two unranked prospects, protecting their status.
Let’s dive into those two players:
REED TRIMBLE – OF
The Orioles firstly added outfielder Reed Trimble to the 40-man roster.
Trimble had a career-year last season, reaching as high as Triple-A Norfolk. The 25-year-old slashed .259/.342/.486 with a .829 OPS and collected a career-high 82 hits and 17 home runs in 90 games played.
CAMERON FOSTER – RHP
The second player added to the 40-man roster is right-hander Cameron Foster.
Foster became a part of the organization during last year’s trade deadline, when the Orioles acquired him in the Gregory Soto trade with the New York Mets.
The 26-year-old pitched in 13 games with the Tides and carried a 3.38 ERA. He pitched 16 innings, earned a save, walked eight batters and struck out 23.
The Orioles had to make room on the 40-man roster by designating infielder Luis Vázquez and outfielder Pedro De Leon for assignment. It is once again at full capacity.
