The Baltimore Orioles purge continues, as veteran right-hander Charlie Morton is headed from Charm City to The Motor City in a deadline deal with the Detroit Tigers.

Morton, who is 41-years-young, was signed in the offseason to a one-year, $15 million contract. He started his Orioles tenor going 1-7 across his first 13 games, carrying an ERA above seven until the beginning of June.

Uncle Chuck has turned things around, going 6-1 in his last 10 games and pitching to a 1.72 ERA in his last six home outings, giving Birdland his best stuff over the last couple of months.

Morton is known for strong postseason performances. Appearing in 18 games (17 starts) this season, Morton is 7-5 with a 3.60 ERA in 80 innings pitched. He has struck out 92 batters versus 33 walks, holding opponents to a .224 average.

The Tigers are sending 22-year-old left-hander Micah Ashman to the Orioles in exchange for Morton.

Ashman is another relief piece, with 35 games of experience over the last two seasons, compiling a 5-3 record this year. He has four holds and four saves in five opportunities and has posted a 1.85 ERA across 48.2 innings, 59 strikeouts and a .161 BAA.

We wish Morton well and thank him for his time with the Birds. We would also like to welcome Ashman to the Birds and look forward to seeing his growth within the system.
