The second full month of baseball is complete, and the best thing the Baltimore Orioles can say is that they stayed consistent.
The Orioles won a total of nine games in May, which is the same total of games they won in April. But the biggest team news occurred off the field.
The Birds fired their long-time manager Brandon Hyde after a disastrous start to the 2025 season, having Tony Mansolino take over for the rest of the year.
Offensively, the Orioles slashed .250/.309/.389 with a .698 OPS. The bats compiled 232 hits, 48 doubles, three triples and 25 home runs.
Maybe the most impressive stat of the month is that O’s base runners stole 25 bases in 32 attempts. The unimpressive part is O’s batters struck out 240 times in 27 games, averaging almost nine strikeouts a game.
Pitching-wise wasn’t much better. A 5.21 ERA was ranked bottom five in the league, and the bullpen had seven blown saves in May. The O’s staff collected 229 strikeouts on the month.
It might have been a tough month to watch overall, but there were four players who really showed out this month. Let’s dive in.
Ryan O’Hearn
Hands down, the MVP in May for the Orioles is handed directly to Ryan O’Hearn.
Posting a team-high .365 batting average, O’Hearn was the go-to bat when the Orioles needed one most. His month consisted of a .992 OPS, 35 hits, five doubles, four home runs and 10 RBIs. He also walked 13 times.
O’Hearn has looked great all season, compiling a .333/.420/.542 slash line with a .962 OPS in 48 games. He has 56 total hits, nine home runs, 21 RBIs and 22 walks.
Dean Kremer
Dean Kremer was lights out in May like he always has been, making six starts and pitching to a 2.72 ERA and a 3-1 record.
His three wins alone accommodated for 33% of the Orioles’ wins in May. The five-year vet struck out 31 and held batters to a .248 batting average for the month.
After a struggling start, Kremer has lowered his ERA down to 4.70 in 12 starts and 67 innings of work. He has shown great control, walking just 18 batters and striking out 51, but he has also given up 10 home runs.
Ramón Laureano
The Orioles OPS leader for the month of may was Ramón Laureano. Yes, he not only had the highest OPS on the Orioles, but he finished top 20 in OPS for the month amongst qualified hitters.
Laureano also posted a .348 average, seven extra-base hits, including three home runs, and slugged .630 in May.
Laureano has been reliable for the Orioles, especially with all the injuries to the outfield. An .852 OPS, six home runs, 11 RBIs and 25 hits for someone who is a defensive specialist is not too bad to see for this season.
Keegan Akin
Outside of the four innings of Andrew Kittredge, Keegan Akin was statistically the best bullpen arm for the Orioles in May.
The lefty pitched to a 3.27 ERA in 11 innings of work, gave up just four earned runs and struck out 11 batters. Unfortunately, he went 0-2 in saves this month.
Akin has been solid in the pen this season. He doesn’t have a record as of yet, but he does have a 3.12 ERA in 26 innings on the mound and has struck out 28, given up 21 hits and is holding batters to a .219 batting average.
