Orioles acquire infielder Luis Vázquez

With just less than two weeks left before pitchers and catchers report for spring training, the Baltimore Orioles continue to add to their depth.

According to multiple industry sources, the Orioles have acquired infielder Luis Vázquez from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations.

Vázquez was selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Alberto Meléndez Torres High School in Puerto Rico. He spent 529 games in the minor leagues and carried a .669 OPS while hitting .240, collecting 452 total hits, 88 doubles, four triples and 44 home runs.

Vázquez made his MLB debut last season on May 22, against the Atlanta Braves. His first big league hit would occur on September 29, against the Cincinnati Reds. Vázquez had a .083 average in just 12 at-bats in 2024.

The 25-year-old brings versatility to the organization, as he can play second, third and shortstop. He also has two minor league options remaining.

To make room for Vázquez on the 40-man roster, the Orioles have designated infielder Emmanuel Rivera for assignment.

Rivera came through for the Oriole in 2024 after an injury to Jordan Westburg really impacted the lineup late in the year. He had a .948 OPS in 27 games for Baltimore, hitting for a .313 average and having eight of his 20 hits going for extra bases.
