We have reached the final Prospect Profiles for the Orioles top 30 prospect list after the 2024 season.
The final player is someone with a bright future who made his big league debut last season. Let’s dive into top O’s prospect Coby Mayo on this final edition of Prospect Profiles.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 65 | Run: 40 | Arm: 70 | Field: 45 | Overall: 60
Mayo was selected in the fourth round of the 2020 MLB Draft out of Stoneman Douglas High School and made his pro debut on June 28, 2021, when he collected his first hit. He would play 26 games at the rookie ball level in 2021, where he hit .329/.440/.566 with a 1.006 OPS.
That was enough for the Orioles to call up Mayo to Low-A Delmarva to finish the 2021 season, where he posted a .311 average and .963 OPS in 27 games. Mayo also went 11-for-11 in stolen bases.
Mayo would start with High-A Aberdeen in 2022 and waste no time. He hit for a .251 average and collected 64 total hits, including 24 home runs, in 68 IronBird games.
Mayo would get the call to Double-A Bowie and play in 34 Baysox games, where he had a .729 OPS, hit five home runs and knocked in 20 RBIs.
It’s safe to say that 2023 was the breakout year for Mayo. He started in Bowie, where he would play in 78 games and slash .307/.424/.603 with a 1.027 OPS, posting 88 total hits, 30 doubles and 17 home runs.
Mayo would earn some hardware with Bowie, as he had two Player of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks, would earn the Player of the Month for June and be the Eastern League MVP for the 2023 season.
Mayo would finish the season with Triple-A Norfolk, and while he didn’t perform to the same degree as he did in Bowie, he still put up a .905 OPS, collected 58 hits, 15 doubles, 12 home runs and 42 walks.
The 2024 season would be a memorable year for Mayo. On the minor league side, he played in 93 games, putting up a .293/.372/.592 slash line with a .964 OPS, while hitting 25 home runs and knocking in 73 RBIs.
On August 2, the Orioles would select the contract of Mayo and let him make his MLB debut. He would go hitless for his first six games but would collect two walks in his first game against the Cleveland Guardians.
Mayo would collect his first major league hit on August 14 against the Washington Nationals. He was sent down the next day and would be a September call-up until his final game on September 20.
Mayo struggled in his 17 big league games, hitting just .098 in 41 at-bats and having just four total hits, all being singles. He also walked four times and struck out 22 times.
The 23-year-old has plus bat speed and strength. His improved approach led to a huge spike in his walk rate and a drop in his strikeout rate. There will always be some swing-and-miss in his game, but it’s looking like he has the chance to be close to an average hitter.
With arguably the best arm in the O’s system, Mayo can make all the throws from the hot corner. He moves well for his size, but the potential of him outgrowing third led him to add first base to his résumé.
