Certain players form a bond with the fans and the city when they are part of a team.

Players like Cal Ripken Jr., Rick Dempsey, Ben McDonald, Jim Palmer and others have been synonymous with the Orioles from their playing days until long after. Joining the Orioles in roles such as minority owners, announcers, special advisors and encyclopedias full of baseball knowledge.

One player who has expressed his love and admiration for the Orioles and the city of Baltimore is former All-Star center fielder Adam Jones.

Baltimore has been his second home. He hosts a podcast, has been active on X (formerly Twitter) and even created a friendly relationship with our group, The Baltimore Battery.

There always seemed to be something more in store for Jones. He’s a smart student of the game of baseball, a keen eye for picking up on player tendencies and areas of improvement and a devoted supporter of the team, offering to help in any way.

As announced by the organization early Monday morning, Jones has been officially named a special advisor to the general manager and community ambassador.

The new role for Jones will see him advise executive vice president and GM Mike Elias on various matters while being a resource for the baseball operations department and players from the major and minor league clubs.

“Baltimore has always meant so much to me, and this unique role will allow me to continue giving back to the community I love,” said Jones. “This is a special opportunity, and I’m eager to embrace it fully.”

Jones will also interact with Birdland fans, corporate partners and members of the front office as a representative of the club. He will also represent the organization in several team sponsored community service projects, including the ‘Adopt a School’ initiative with Harlem Park Elementary Middle School,  the RBI Program and the Challenger League.

Jones’ new role will begin when he joins the team in Sarasota, FL, to serve as a guest coach this spring.

“I am grateful for the Orioles relationships I have formed since my retirement, which have led us to this exciting partnership,” said Jones. “Having the opportunity to be around the game that I love while also learning the operations side of baseball from one of the best general managers is truly an honor. I am happy to be a resource for the Orioles organization and will offer everything I’ve learned from past experience to help the team succeed.”

Jones retired as a Baltimore Oriole on September 15, 2023. He spent 11 seasons with the club after being acquired from the Seattle Mariners in 2008 and would spend one season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and two years in Japan before hanging up his cleats.

Jones ranks in the top five in Orioles history in at-bats, total bases, home runs, RBIs, extra-base hits and runs scored. He is in the top 10 in hits, doubles, triples, stolen bases and games played.

During his time with the Birds, Jones was a five-time All-Star, six-time Heart and Hustle Award nominee, four-time Gold Glover, three-time Most Valuable Oriole, a Silver Slugger and a three-time Roberto Clemente Award nominee.

As a player, Jones was highly active in the Baltimore community. Not only providing monetary donations, Jones dedicated time with the Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Baltimore, the RBI Program and the Maryland YMCA. His goal was to give the youth someone who cared and to provide an opportunity for a better future.

“We are excited to formally welcome him back to our team, and we look forward to utilizing his experience, expertise and perspective to help the franchise achieve sustained excellence,” GM Mike Elias said.

Baltimore is proud to have one of its most beloved players return to the organization. His dedication and ‘never give up’ attitude showed his heart for the club and will now be a part of the organization going forward.

We would like to congratulate and welcome Adam Jones back to the organization and on his new role with the club.
