The 2022 MLB Draft for the Baltimore Orioles was known as the culmination of the rebuild, as the Birds got their star prospect in Jackson Holliday with the first overall selection.
In the process, the Orioles also selected a future star of an outfielder in Dylan Beavers. Let’s discuss the O’s No. 6 overall prospect in this edition of Prospect Profiles.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45
Beavers attended the University of California, Berkeley beginning during the 2020 season, and he rarely played in the shortened COVID season, appearing in just 12 games and collecting seven hits, including his first home run.
His sophomore season was a breakout year for the young outfielder, as he slashed .303/.401/.630 with a 1.031 OPS in 55 games. He posted 64 total hits, 11 doubles, two triples and 18 home runs with 49 RBIs and also showed off his speed by stealing 10 bases.
Beavers’ junior year was a little of a down one but still was a pretty solid season, as he collected 62 total hits, 16 doubles, 17 home runs and 51 walks. Out of college, he was ranked as the 22nd best draft prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, and the Orioles selected him with the 33rd overall pick.
Beavers made his professional debut in the FCL rookie league on August 4, where he played in just three games before being called up to the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds, where he tore it up. He hit for a .359 average and a .999 OPS in 16 games, including 23 total hits with nine of them going for extra bases. He would finish the season with the High-A Aberdeen IronBirds for just four games.
His 2023 campaign showed his true potential, as in 85 games with Aberdeen, he slashed .273/.369/.473 with a .842 OPS. The San Luis Obispo, CA, native stole 22 bases and hit 26 doubles with three triples, which was good enough for a call-up to Double-A Bowie on August 2, where he would hit for a .321 average in 34 games. He would be named a SAL Postseason All-Star while with Aberdeen.
In 2024 in 119 games with the Baysox, Beavers had a .756 OPS with 15 home runs. He would earn his first Player of the Week honor and would finish the season with six games in Triple-A Norfolk.
A polished left-handed hitter, Beavers generated Christian Yelich comps in college, with our own writer/editor Jared Watson calling him the next Kyle Tucker. His above-average speed and a near-plus arm could keep him in center field, but with Enrique Bradfield Jr. also on the rise, Beavers likely would shift to a corner spot.
