We have finally reached the top 10 prospects in the Baltimore Orioles farm system, and we are starting out strong.
Outfielder Jud Fabian is an older and experienced prospect that we have been fans of since he was a freshman in college. Let’s dive into the O’s No. 10 overall prospect on this edition of Prospect Profiles.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 60 | Run: 60 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45
Fabian’s career starts in 2019 as a freshman at the University of Florida, when he debuted on February 15 against Long Beach State and collected his first collegiate hit, which ended up being a double.
Fabian would have a solid freshman year, hitting .232 while having a .764 OPS. His year included 39 total hits, 16 extra-base hits, including seven home runs, and a multi-home-run game against Yale. He also showed off his speed by stealing seven bases.
Fabian had his best collegiate season stat-wise as a sophomore during the shortened 2020 season. In 17 games, he slashed .294/.407/.603 with a 1.010 OPS.
While 2020 was his best statistical season, 2021 was his best season as a collegiate player accolades-wise. Fabian had his first 20-homer season as a junior, was named All-SEC First Team and All-SEC Defensive Team and made the All-American Third Team.
Fabian was drafted with the 40th overall pick of the 2021 draft by the Boston Red Sox but decided to return for another year of college. In his final year, he would put himself in the record books, as he finished his Gator career third in home runs with 56, had his only three-homer game against South Florida and finished with a .989 fielding percentage.
This would be good enough for the Orioles to select Fabian with the 67th overall pick in the 2022 draft.
The Ocala, Florida, native would make his professional debut on August 3 and collect his first pro hit on August 9 in the FCL. He would spend just four games in Rookie Ball before being called up to the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds, where he completely took over. In just 10 games, Fabian hit .386, with 12 of his 17 hits being an extra-base hit.
The 2023 season would be the first full season of Fabian, and he took no time to show his skills. He would spend 56 games as an Aberdeen IronBird and had a .882 OPS, 54 hits, 13 doubles and nine home runs. He also showed off his speed, stealing 19 bases.
Fabian would receive his first MiLB award, as he was named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week on June 11. He would finish the season in Double-A with the Baysox, where he would struggle offensively, hitting .176 and still showing his power potential with 24 total home runs.
Fabian would start 2024 in Bowie, where he would show off his raw pop once again, collecting 16 doubles and 18 home runs. Because of this, he would be called up to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides on August 20. He hit just .159, had a .489 OPS, hit two home runs, 18 total hits and struck out 51 times with Norfolk.
For his entire career, Fabian has displayed a tantalizing combination of power and speed, generating legit bat speed from the right side. Add that to his good wheels and excellent instincts on the bases, and you can see why the organization thinks so highly of the 24-year-old outfielder.
