If you have been following our Prospect Profile series this offseason, you realize that this is a little different than usual.
Because of the recent Rule 5 Draft, the top 30 prospects list for the Baltimore Orioles changed overnight, as the Birds lost former eighth ranked prospect Juan Nuñez to the San Diego Padres. This changed the entire order of the top 30.
With that said, let’s meet newly added top 30 prospect member, infielder Luis Almeyda.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40
Almeyda is not like other international prospects, as he was actually born in the States. He would eventually move to the Dominican Republic and would be considered an international prospect.
Coming out of a stacked 2023 international prospect class, Almeyda was ranked 20th on MLB Pipeline’s international rankings and would sign to the Orioles just three months before his 17th birthday.
Almeyda made his professional debut on June 5 and would collect his first hit on June 6. He would spend the entire 2023 season in the Dominican Summer League but would play just a total of 19 games after suffering a shoulder injury that required surgery.
In those 19 games, Almeyda would slash .190/.290/.310 with a .600 OPS. He collected 11 total hits, a double, two home runs and 14 RBIs. He also walked eight times and stole two bases in four attempts.
Almeyda would be a part of the Orioles’ FCL rookie ball team in 2024 and would start slow, having five hitless games in a row. However, after posting a .279 average in the month of June, there was a huge glimpse of potential shown to end the season.
In 53 games, he had a .653 OPS and an astonishing .339 OBP while batting .200. He collected 31 total hits, five home runs, 23 RBIs, walked 31 times and stole 12 bases.
Almeyda has a quick right-handed swing and hits the ball hard, generating a lot of line drives and power from a 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame that should strengthen as his body matures. At a very young age, he has flashed all five tools but needs time to develop on both sides of the ball for a better gauge of how high his ceiling really will be.
