It’s common to see prospects get traded at a mid-summer deadline and end up on their new organization’s top 30 prospects list.
However, it’s not very common that a prospect for prospect trade happens in that scenario. That’s how the Orioles acquired right-hander Patrick Reilly, who’s next up on this edition of Prospect Profiles.
Scouting Grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Cutter: 50 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 40 | Overall: 45
Reilly attended Vanderbilt as a freshman during the 2020-2021 season. He made his debut on February 24, 2021, when he pitched a single inning during a 12-1 victory against Western Kentucky.
He would make his first start against Georgia, giving up three earned runs in three innings. The Long Branch, NJ, native posted a 4.98 ERA in 16 games and 43.1 innings of work.
Reilly’s collegiate career as a whole was an up and down roller coaster. Pitching in 49 total games and making 14 starts, Reilly had an 11-9 collective record in 144 innings of work, allowing 125 total hits, 84 earned runs, 93 walks and striking out 187 batters.
Reilly would end up being selected in the fifth round of the 2023 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates and would start his professional career with their Low-A affiliate, the Bradenton Marauders, where he would make his debut on August 8.
He would stay with the Marauders for the entire 2023 season and post a 2-2 record in nine games and 10.2 innings, carrying a 5.91 ERA, recording a save, giving up seven earned runs and striking out 19 batters.
Reilly would earn a call-up for the 2024 season to the Pirates’ High-A affiliate, the Greensboro Grasshoppers. He would be turned into a starter full-time, making 19 starts and carrying a 3.38 ERA while pitching 88 total innings. The Vandy product would strike out 108 batters and walk 41, all while getting traded to the Orioles on July 30 for utility player Billy Cook.
Reilly would join the Double-A Bowie Baysox on August 1 and would make his debut on August 3. The 23-year-old played in eight games in the O’s organization, including six starts with the Baysox, where he collected a 3.73 ERA in 31.1 innings of work.
A 6-foot-3 righty, Reilly leans heavily on his fastball, which can top at around 100 mph. His mid-80s slider can also turn into an effective, harder cutter, as he also has thrown a change, two-seamer and curve at times.
Reilly will continue to develop his delivery and focus on throwing more strikes as he continues to work through the upper levels of the minor leagues. Don’t be surprised if you see him with Triple-A Norfolk by season’s end.
