Another international prospect to talk about, Thomas Sosa is quite similar to the O’s No. 16 prospect in Braylin Tavera, as both are speedy outfielders with plus offensive potential.
But on this edition of Prospect Profiles, it’s all about the O’s No. 15 prospect, who began to turn heads last season throughout Birdland.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40
Sosa signed out of the Dominican Repubic to the Orioles just three days before his 17th birthday for a contract of $400,000 and immediately went to work in the DSL, debuting on June 6, 2022. He would end up going hitless but drew his first professional walk.
Sosa would struggle in his first pro season in the DSL, as he would have a career-low .596 OPS in 45 games. He had 28 hits, five doubles, three home runs and knocked in 18 RBIs.
The 2023 season would see him in the FCL, where he would have a big year. Sosa slashed .290/.385/.492 with a .877 OPS in 39 games, collecting 36 total hits and 14 extra-base hits while showing off his speed with five stolen bases.
Low-A Delmarva would be getting a new outfielder for the 2024 season, and despite a slow start for Sosa, he would still put together a decent season with the Shorebirds, posting a .697 OPS in 74 games. The 19-year-old would leg out 18 doubles with his 66 total hits and would also show more of that plus speed, as he would steal 22 bases.
On August 13, Sosa would get called up to the High-A Aberdeen IronBirds, and his season would take a downfall. Sosa would post a .181 average in his 19 games with Aberdeen and have a miniscule .492 OPS. Sosa collected just 13 hits, including one extra-base hit, yet he still showed off his speed, stealing eight bases, giving him 30 total stolen bases in 2024.
According to MLB Pipeline, Sosa draws comparisons to former Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco for his size, build, stance and makeup. He’s long and lanky with a solid approach and flashes of line drive power that should increase as his body fills out.
A natural center fielder, Sosa got experience at all three outfield spots last year and could potentially move to a corner one day. He has the power and arm strength to profile well at either left or right.
