Just as the MLB Winter Meetings are set to begin in Dallas, Texas, the Baltimore Orioles have made a move.

General Manager Mike Elias and Co. have signed right-handed outfielder Tyler O’Neill to a three-year deal worth $49.5 million. The deal includes an opt-out after 2025, and the AAV comes out to $16.5 million per year.

This deal means a couple of things. First, it means the first multi-year deal the Orioles have given out since signing Alex Cobb ahead of 2018. It also means the Orioles are likely out of the running for outfielders Teoscar Hernández and former Oriole fan favorite, Anthony Santander.

However, they got their guy.

In 2024, O’Neill certainly saw a resurgence back to what he is fully capable of doing. Last season saw 411 at-bats for O’Neill, his most since 2021. He hitched 99 hits on the year, with 31 being home runs, and added another 18 doubles.

These extra bases were good for an OPS of .847, which would have been good for the second best for everyday players on the Orioles last year behind Gunnar Henderson.

O’Neill will continue to be an above average power hitter, especially now that the left field wall will be moved in some at Camden Yards.

O’Neill’s right-handed bat in the outfield is also a good fit for the Brandon-Hyde-led Orioles. Adding that bat to an outfield group that is left-handed heavy was necessary. This move will allow for a lot more freedom at the outfield position and likely could be a platoon option with Heston Kjerstad.

  1. Not a fan of this move. Overpaid for a decent player. Would rather they have used that money on a Santander resigning.

  2. His contract in 2023 was for $4.95 million. How does he now get a three year $49.5M deal? And he has been injured a lot during his career.

A lot of $$ for someone who faces mostly lefties, spent 27 days on the IL last year and has no speed to speak of. We have so much talent in the minors that I would just let Mayo and Silent J get a lot of at bats and take my chances spending the $49M on pitching.
