We have talked multiple times about international prospects throughout this series.
Now, it’s time to talk about one that made Orioles franchise history when he joined the organization. Let’s talk about the Orioles’ No. 16 overall prospect, outfielder Braylin Tavera, on this edition of Prospect Profiles.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40
Tavera is a product of the Zorilla Baseball Academy in the Dominican Republic. Heading into the 2022 international signing period, he signed a $1.7 million dollar bonus to join the Orioles, which would end up being an Orioles record for most spend on one international prospect. Tavera signed just one month before his 17th birthday.
Tavera would make an immediate impact during his debut game in the DSL, having a two-RBI game. The Hato Mayor, Dominican native would play 47 games during the 2022 season and slashed .243/.411/.319 with a .730 OPS. He had 35 hits and five doubles and hit two home runs while knocking in 14 RBIs.
Tavera would stay within the DSL for the 2023 season, where he would have his best season to date. He would put together an OPS of .812 in 35 total games while also showing off a little power, hitting four home runs and driving in 20. Tavera would also show off his speed, stealing 13 bases throughout the season.
Tavera would start 2024 with the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds, where he would have a season of struggles. Between the 84 games in Delmarva and three games in the FCL on rehab, Tavera slashed just .173/.297/.212 with a .509 OPS, collecting 53 hits, five doubles, two triples and one home run with 26 RBIs. He would walk 50 times and steal 27 bases.
Regardless of his rough season, scouts still see a potential five-tool prospect in Tavera. He’s a tall and athletic right-handeder with a smooth swing and advanced approach at the plate at this early stage in his career. His speed and athleticism give him a chance to be a plus defender in center field long-term.
Tavera will be just 20 years old when the 2025 season starts and still has a lot of growth left in his minor league career. Expect him to start back with Delmarva and work his way to High-A Aberdeen.
