The Baltimore Orioles have rounded out their major league staff for the 2025 season, announcing the addition of former catcher Robinson Chirinos as bench coach and the promotion of Triple-A Norfolk manager Buck Britton as a major league coach.
Chirinos and Britton were the final two pieces of a staff that has come together over the last month. The Orioles also confirmed the moves of naming Cody Asche hitting coach, Tommy Joseph an assistant hitting coach and Sherman Johnson an assistant hitting coach and upper-level hitting coordinator.
Chirinos, 40, will succeed former big league manager Fredi González in the bench coach role. González was seen as second in command to O’s skipper Brandon Hyde, providing insight from his time leading the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves.
This isn’t the first time Chirinos has taken a leadership role in Baltimore’s clubhouse. He played one season, his final, wearing the orange and black and became an instant role model for current O’s All-Star backstop Adley Rutschman during his rookie year.
Britton, 38, is the brother of former Oriole closer Zack Britton. He spent the last three years managing Triple-A Norfolk, and he also managed Double-A Bowie and Low-A Delmarva since 2018.
An important factor into this promotion are the relationships formed between Britton and many of the O’s young core. With the Tides, he led many of the players who have since broken through to the majors, such as the aforementioned Rutschman, Colton Cowser, Jordan Westburg and Gunnar Henderson.
Britton also led Norfolk to a Triple-A National Championship in 2023 and earned the Orioles’ Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award in both 2021 and 2023.
