This 2024-2025 MLB offseason for the Baltimore Orioles is huge, and there really is no denying it.

A 275-211 record since the start of 2022 is great. That’s the most wins in a three-year stretch since the Jim-Palmer-led Orioles won 292 from 1978 to 1980.

However, an 0-5 postseason record in the last two seasons, combining for a record of 0-10 in the last 10 playoff games for the Orioles, is not quite as great.

During this offseason, Orioles owner David Rubenstein and GM Mike Elias can pair up to right all those wrongs. This duo also has all the resources available, the smarts and technology and the motivation from agonizing defeat to help fuel what should be a very exciting winter for the Birds.

As Oriole fans, bearing the burden of a fandom that follows a team who leaves you wishing it could be more like the others, I speak for all fans when I say this: This offseason means a hell of a lot to us, and it should.

We haven’t seen a multi-year contract be given out by the Orioles since Alex Cobb signed ahead of the 2018 season. It’s time for Elias and Co. to go out and change that.

This isn’t to say I think that they aren’t doing that, as Elias has been reported to be adamant that he is doing quite the opposite already. Along with Rubenstein stating himself that the funds are there and available, it’s just up to Elias’ baseball brain to allocate them in the proper places.

What I mean is that Elias and Co. need to go out and be aggressive in a way players and agents haven’t seen an Orioles GM and owner be before. We know every free agent isn’t going to come play in Baltimore.

However, we want to see our team be one of the competitors across the different markets, instead of being the ones saying, “Why the heck couldn’t we have done that?” That statement is common vocabulary amongst Oriole fans.

Already before writing this, Elias and his crew have begun to operate things a little differently. It was announced on Friday that the left field wall inside Camden Yards is going to be moved in and lowered. The move to push the wall back to an astounding 13 feet tall and 398 feet deep at worst was certainly an exaggeration.

Elias admitting that and taking the steps to fix it is huge. It’s obvious that it’s a move to not only help the hitters already on the team, especially the right-handers, but to make playing in Baltimore that much more attractive for free agent position players.

Say someone like Teoscar Hernández, perhaps, all while not ruining the original concept of trying to make Camden Yards more pitcher-friendly. Max Fried, anyone?

We see the vision with that, paired with comments made by Elias where he has already been actively engaged in talks pertaining to long-term, multi-million dollar deals. It’s a fantastic start.

This free agent class has a ton of great free agents, a lot of them pricey, who the Orioles should be deeply engaged with nonetheless. Atypical than anything the Orioles have really ever done.

But unlike any other Oriole team, this one is in a position with immense talent, vast resources and an incredible potential to be added to, to the extent we haven’t seen before. We just hope they can take advantage of it.

The Winter Meetings commence December 8-11. For once, all Oriole fans hope and deserve to see their team’s name plastered over MLB outlets, from the time of those meetings until spring training, with stories of great and lucrative signings made that surprise everyone. Instead of the same offseason gig we have been accustomed to in years past.

  1. Do NOT spend big dollars on any long term contracts.

Sign and extend your own to reasonable but fair deals. (let’s start with Adley, Tony and Gunnar)

Stay the course and let this team and these players develop.
