Alex Pham is the first drafted player of our Prospect Profiles series, which might sound crazy since he is the fourth prospect we’ve covered thus far.

Pham is a player who has grinded his way to the top and has proved himself day in and day out. Let’s take a dive into his career.

Scouting Grades: Fastball: 50 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 50 | Cutter: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Pham started his career at the University of San Francisco from 2018-2021, and despite a not so great senior year, he really had a solid collegiate career. In 73 games, Pham went 9-11 with a 3.60 ERA in 182.1 innings of work and gave up 155 hits, 73 earned runs, walked 91 batters and struck out 215. He also held opponents to a combined .227 batting average.

The Orioles selected Pham in the 19th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, and he wasted no time moving up the ladder in his first year, pitching just five games in rookie ball before getting the call to Low-A Delmarva. Pham would have a 4.63 ERA in 11.2 innings and would hold batters to a .313 batting average throughout his entire 2021 season, ending with two wins and three shutout performances in Delmarva.

The 2022 season wouldn’t be much different, as he again spent time between three affiliates. Pham would start with Delmarva and finish with High-A Aberdeen while also having a rehab assignment with one of the rookie ball teams.

Pham appeared in 18 total games and would have a 4.09 ERA, which was not much lower than the 2021 season, but he would make a huge change in lowering the batting average against to .220. He would also walk just 18 batters and strike out 46.

The 2023 season would be the turning point for Pham. Up until this point, he was mostly used in the bullpen, but that changed when he would start 19 of his 26 appearances between his time with Aberdeen and Double-A Bowie.

Despite the change, Pham had a breakout year, as he would be named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Month in May and would finish as an Orioles MiLB All-Star. In 112 innings, the Union City, California, native would carry a 2.57 ERA, only walk a total of 42 batters and struck out 130. Pham also lowered his batting average against once again, bringing it down to .182.

Things were looking up for Pham, as he was also added to the Orioles’ top 30 prospects list after the trade deadline.

Pham entered the 2024 season with all the momentum. He spent the entire 2024 season with the Baysox, and while his numbers inflated a little, he still put together a solid season in the end. In 27 starts, Pham went 7-4 with a 4.24 ERA and pitched a total of 119 innings, gave up 97 hits, walked 50 batters and struck out 138. Pham would earn the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors in July.

Heading into the 2025 season,  we suspect that Pham, 25, spends most of his time with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides as a starter, especially if he has a good spring training. Keep an eye out on Pham moving forward, as he continues to climb the ranks.
