The Baltimore Orioles keep adding depth to their organizational depth, as earlier today, it was announced that the club has signed infielder Vimael Machín to a minor league deal.
Machín will be joining his fourth organization despite only making it to the major leagues with one of them, the Athletics.
Machín originally started at the Puerto Rico baseball academy and was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2011 but decided to spend a few years at Virginia Commonwealth University. He would play there for four years before being selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 10th round of the 2015 draft.
Machín would stay with the Cubs up until the 2019 Rule 5 Draft, when the Philadelphia Phillies would pick him up. Later that day, he would be purchased by the Athletics, and his career would take off.
Just seven months after being purchased by the A’s, Machín would make his MLB debut on July 26, 2020.
Machín would play three professional seasons with the Athletics and would play in 112 games. In those games, Machín would slash .208/.290/.261 with a .551 OPS, collecting 66 total hits, 14 doubles and hit just one home run. The now 31-year-old would also walk 36 times, strike out 67 times and drive in 14 RBIs.
Machín would sign with the Phillies in January of 2023 but would be released in June. The Humacao, Puerto Rico, native is another depth piece for the Orioles and is likely going to be seen most in Triple-A Norfolk.
Welcome to Birdland, Vimael Machín!
