When signing young international prospects, it’s always a risk, just like everything else in baseball.
The Baltimore Orioles took a risk with Jordan Sanchez, and so far, it looks like the risk is going to reap a reward. Let’s discuss the young outfield prospect.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40
Sanchez was signed in December of 2023, which is actually later than the normal time to sign prospects, as most international prospects sign on or around January 15. The Cuban outfielder, though, was a part of the 2023 international class, nonetheless.
The 19-year-old was ranked nicely by the MLB Pipeline crew. His hit rating of 45 and run rating of 50 stands out for him, but they are overshadowed offensively by his 55 power rating.
His defensive rating is around the same, as he has a score of 45, but his arm rating overshadows at a score of 50. He showed all of this potential in his first full season of professional ball.
Sanchez started in the Dominican Summer League and wasted no time showing off his plate discipline and speed. In his first game, despite him going hitless, Sanchez walked twice and stole his first base.
It would only be the very next game when he would collect his first hit. He would have his first home run in just his fourth game as well, starting the season with an 11-game on-base streak.
In 38 DSL games, Sanchez slashed .333/.432/.605 with a 1.037 OPS, collecting 43 hits, 13 doubles, two triples and six home runs. He would also drive in 37 RBIs, walk 23 times, steal five bases in seven attempts and play all three outfield positions.
Sanchez was named the DSL Player of the Week on June 23 this past season and was also considered both a DSL Mid-Season and Postseason All-Star. He would, unfortunately, go hitless in his two at-bats in the DSL All-Star Game.
If Sanchez progresses like we’ve seen so far, we could see him in Baltimore within the next few years. As mentioned earlier, the Matanzas, Cuba, native is just 19 years old and is already looking like a young star left-handed outfielder in the making.
