The 2024 baseball season has officially ended, and it’s time for us at The Baltimore Battery to put together our 2024 Orioles All-Prospect Team.
This team will consist of the eight positions on the field, not counting pitcher, one designated hitter, three starters and three relievers. These selections were chosen by the entire Battery staff, along with much research and player comparisons.
Without spending anymore time, here is The Baltimore Battery’s 2024 Orioles All-Prospect Team.
Catcher: Samuel Basallo
For the second year in a row, Samuel Basallo is the catcher for this team, and it honestly was a no-brainer with the season he had.
Basallo started the season at the Double-A level with the Bowie Baysox before getting called up to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides on August 27. While his numbers were on the lower end in Norfolk, he still put together one heck of a season collectively.
In 127 games, Basallo slashed .278/.341/.449 with a .790 OPS. He collected 135 hits, 35 doubles, 19 home runs and knocked in 65 RBIs. He also stole 10 bases in 15 attempts.
The now-20-year-old was a one-time Eastern Player of the Week winner and even participated in the Futures Game during the All-Star break. Remember, Basallo still is very young, and to be performing the way he is makes it way more impressive for the 13th overall prospect in all of baseball.
First Base: TT Bowens
When speaking of prospects who are considered to be underrated in the Orioles organization, TT Bowens is one to think of right off the bat.
Bowens had a career-year, showing off his power and his glove at first base. The New London, Connecticut, native started the season with the Baysox and eventually got the call up to Norfolk on August 6, never going back.
Bowens, 26, put together a slash line of .226/.284/.407 in 105 games this past season, posting 89 hits, 24 doubles, one triple and 15 home runs. He also walked 29 times and stole seven bases in eight attempts during his comeback season.
Second Base: Aron Estrada
In his first year out of rookie ball, Aron Estrada wasted no time to make his name known throughout the Orioles organization.
Estrada entered the season mostly unknown and finished with accolades as an Orioles organizational top 30 prospect. The 19-year-old Venezuela native started the season with the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds until he got promoted to the High-A Aberdeen IronBirds on August 5.
Estrada had a slash line of .286/.356/.416 with a .772 OPS in 117 total games, collecting 124 hits, 19 doubles, five triples and nine home runs. He also showed off his plus speed, stealing 39 bases in 52 attempts.
The O’s No. 29 prospect won three separate accolades, all with the Carolina League. He earned Player of the Week and Player of the Month honors in June and is a member of the Post-Season All-Star Team. Keep a close eye on this kid next season.
Third Base: Coby Mayo
If we had to name a captain of this team, it would 100% be Coby Mayo, who was the best overall prospect in the Orioles system for the 2024 season.
Mayo spent the majority of his time in the minor leagues at the Triple-A level outside of a rehab assignment with the IronBirds. He also made his big league debut on August 2 in Cleveland, but for this article, we will solely stick with his MiLB time.
Mayo put together a .293/.372/.592 slash line in 93 total minor league games. He tallied 105 hits, 26 doubles, three triples and knocked 25 balls out for home runs. He also drove in 73 and stole four bases in eight attempts.
Mayo walked away with some hardware as well. He was named a Baseball America MiLB All-Star and won the Brooks Robinson Orioles MiLB Position Player of the Year Award. Mayo was also named the third baseman for the All-MiLB First Team in what seems likely his last minor league season.
Shortstop: Frederick Bencosme
Picking a shortstop was semi-tough in all honesty because the consensus pick from last year, Jackson Holliday, lost his prospect eligibility this season. That was until we realized that Frederick Bencosme, who we always considered a primary second baseman, played more games at short than he did at second this season with the Baysox.
In 125 games in Bowie, Bencosme slashed 240/.318/.348 with a .666 OPS and had 107 hits, 18 doubles, three triples and eight home runs. He also collected 45 RBIs, walked 49 times and stole 28 bases in 33 attempts this past season.
While Bencosme didn’t earn any hardware, he did show off a fantastic glove and was a fan favorite at the beautiful Prince George’s Stadium in 2024.
Outfielder: Enrique Bradfield Jr.
The 2023 first-round pick spent the entire season of 2024 proving two different things: How fast he is and how fantastic his glove is.
Bradfield Jr. put together an electric season, to say the least, and it was fun to watch every single part of it. EBJ started the season with the IronBirds until his call-up to the Baysox on August 13.
Before we even mention his hitting stats from the season, we have to mention that Bradfield Jr. stole 74 bases in 87 attempts, and that isn’t even the most impressive part. He stole 74 bases and only struck out 72 times, meaning stole two more bases than he did going down looking or swinging.
Bradfield Jr. also slashed .272/.358/.371, put together a .729 OPS and had 110 hits. The Vandy product is showing the potential the O’s saw when selecting him with the 17th overall pick in 2023.
Outfielder: Reed Trimble
We mentioned the word underrated earlier when talking about TT Bowens. We could also use that word here when talking about outfielder Reed Trimble.
Drafted back in 2021, Trimble played a career-high 65 games this year and really showed out, putting up a .833 OPS while slashing .263/.374/.459 in just 209 at-bats. He had 55 hits, 17 doubles, three triples and six home runs, also knocking in 34 base runners and walking 39 times.
Trimble also went 29-for-29 in stolen bases and is also 40-for-40 in the 136 games he has played in the minor leagues. Trimble might have some gone through some significant injuries in his career thus far, but 40 straight stolen bases to start a pro career has to be some type of record, right?
Outfielder: Jud Fabian
Jud Fabian is really starting to prove himself as a major asset to the Orioles organization in the future, starting the season with the Baysox before his call-up to the Tides on August 20.
Fabian hit 20 home runs this year, and that still isn’t his career-high for the former Florida Gator. He actually had a down year statistically with a .695 OPS and a slash line of .215/.305/.390. However, Fabian did have 102 hits, with 21 doubles and a triple to his name.
He collected 65 RBIs and stole 16 bases in 22 attempts, but Fabian showed the glove off a ton this past season as well, which helped his case over some other candidates for the final outfield spot.
Designated Hitter: Creed Willems
The final offensive player to join the team is actually someone who had a breakout campaign. Creed Willems put together a season that put him on the map.
In 98 games, Willems slashed .243/.322/.462 with a .784 OPS in 346 at-bats. He posted 84 hits, 21 doubles, two triples and 17 home runs, driving in 65 RBIs and stealing two bases.
Willems collected some hardware as well, earning an SAL Player of the Week honor while with the IronBirds in April and taking home the SAL Player of the Month in April.
Starting Pitcher: Zach Fruit
In his first season in the Orioles organization, Zach Fruit just shows up and completely shows out.
Fruit spent the entire year with the IronBirds and won the South Atlantic League ERA title for the 2024 season with no trouble whatsoever.
In 25 games and 21 starts, Fruit had a 3-4 record with a SAL-low 3.03 ERA in 107 innings of work. He gave up 78 hits, 36 earned runs, seven home runs, walked 55 batters and struck out 113. He also held hitters to a .201 batting average and carried a 1.24 WHIP.
We mentioned Fruit a lot this past season, and we really had to with the performance he put together in 2024. Expect him to start the 2025 campaign in Bowie, as he continues to climb the ranks.
Starting Pitcher: Brandon Young
Brandon Young is someone who O’s GM Mike Elias mentioned at one point as a pitcher to keep an eye on in 2024 to make his MLB debut. While that didn’t happen, Young still showed out with the Baysox until his call up to the Tides on May 28.
Young, 26, carried a collective 3.57 ERA in 27 games and 24 starts, where he put together a record of 5-6 and pitched 111 total innings, giving up 102 hits, walking 37 batters, allowing 44 earned runs and striking out 132 batters.
Young won the Jim Palmer Orioles MiLB Pitcher of the Year Award this past year, which joins him with an illustrious group of names over the years. Keep an eye out for Young when it comes to the 2025 season, especially during spring training.
Starting Pitcher: Chayce McDermott
Another player who debuted in the bigs in 2024, Chayce McDermott showed why trading for him in 2022 made a lot of sense.
McDermott pitched in 22 games and 21 starts and carried a 3.78 ERA in exactly 100 innings of work with Norfolk. He gave up 81 hits, 42 earned runs, 60 walks and struck out 144, holding batters to a .219 batting average.
McDermott was a two-time International League Player of the Week this season as well. Like Young, keep an eye this coming spring on McDermott, as he could fight for a spot on the 26-man roster.
Relief Pitcher: Yaqui Rivera
The best part about this team is how insane the three bullpen pitchers were, and it starts with Yaqui Rivera. It’s hard to believe this stat, but Rivera actually has the highest ERA of the three bullpen pitchers, and it’s still below a two.
Rivera carried a 1.99 ERA in 37 appearances and 54.1 innings of work with Aberdeen. He gave up 31 hits, 12 earned runs, two home runs, walked 27 batters and struck out 59. He also held batters to a .161 average.
The 21-year-old was responsible for two holds and had six saves in 10 opportunities. He was someone who was lights out this year, regardless of not many knowing his name.
Relief Pitcher: Nestor German
Nestor German was drafted in 2023, and he might be the best reliever in the Orioles farm system.
German was straight dominant on the mound during the entire 2024 season that he split between the Shorebirds and the IronBirds.
In 21 games and 12 short starts, German had a 1.59 ERA in 73.2 innings of work. The 22-year-old gave up 52 hits, 13 earned runs, walked just 17 batters and struck out 90 of them. He also held batters to a .195 batting average and carried a WHIP under one (0.94).
German didn’t earn any hardware this season, but he did show that picking him in the 11th round was a steal for the Orioles.
Relief Pitcher: Dylan Heid
The final player on the team is none other than Dylan Heid, who was reliable during the 2023 season, and that carried over into the 2024 season, as he was the primary reliever option for the Baysox.
In 41 appearances, Heid had a 1.69 ERA in 64 innings of work, collecting four holds and five saves in six opportunities.
Heid, 26, gave up 40 hits, 12 earned runs, walked 34 and struck out 60, holding batters to a .178 average.
