Jackson Holliday has officially graduated from prospect eligibility, which means that things in the Orioles’ top 30 prospects list have shifted.
Holliday’s graduation opens up a spot for recently drafted infielder DJ Layton to enter the top 30.
The 18-year-old was just recently selected in the sixth round by the Orioles, and while he has yet to be added to a team to make his pro debut, his high school stats are very promising.
Layton carried a 1.251 OPS during his senior year of high school at Charlotte Christian. Although he hasn’t shown much pop as of yet, his .449 average for his senior year is something exciting to see moving forward for the switch-hitter.
Layton was the only high schooler who the Orioles took in the top 10 rounds, going more than twice over slot to sign him away from his commitment to Southern Miss for $720,000.
As referenced above, Layton won’t make his official professional debut until 2025, but the kid impressed his new employers with how he looked on the back fields in Florida after signing last month.
Along with Layton’s introduction, we also see movement in the top 30 overall with Holliday’s graduation.
Coby Mayo is now the top Orioles prospect, with Samuel Basallo being ranked second on the list. We also see a decrease in the number of top 100 from three O’s prospects to two.
Something to realize is that when a player becomes a top 30 prospect for their organization, the media attention grows for them. That player now gets more recognition, hype and eyes on their performance.
Holliday’s is the final graduation that can occur for the remainder of this season, so this updated version of the Orioles’ top 30 prospects list is finalized for the year.
