Another week is in the books, and man, what a week it was.

Down on the farm, we saw doubleheaders, amazing defensive plays and even the same player walk-off two games on the same night.

With all that said, here are the O’s Prospects of the Week.

Delmarva Shorebirds: Stiven Acevedo – OF / Yeiber Cartaya – RHP

Delmarva’s offense was not the greatest this past series, to say the least, so finding a hitter of the week was difficult. We decided on Stiven Acevedo because he actually put together a solid week despite how things looked.

In five games, Acevedo slashed .286/.286/.429 with a .714 OPS. He collected six hits, a home run and two RBIs and also went perfect in stolen bases, swiping three bases in three attempts.

Acevedo has been a Shorebird all season and has been one of the most consistent hitters on the team. In 80 games, the 22-year-old is slashing .219/.280/.336 with a .616 OPS with 62 hits, 10 doubles, one triple and seven home runs while knocking 35 RBIs. He also has walked 21 times, struck out 84 times and has stolen 22 bases in 27 attempts.

As for the pitching side of things, it’s always nice to see the success stories for rookie ball players who get their first chance, and they just take full advantage of the opportunity.

Yeiber Cartaya came into relief and absolutely took over during game one of Saturday’s doubleheader. He picked up the win while going four innings, giving up three hits, walking one batter and striking out seven.

Cartaya has played in just two games in Delmarva and has a 1.17 ERA while holding batters to a .167 average in those two games. He does have a season ERA of a 3.56, though, as he battled a little in rookie ball.

Aberdeen IronBirds: Tavian Josenberger – OF / Edgar Portes – RHP

For the final time, as he is now en route to Double-A Bowie, Tavian Josenberger takes home the honor this week.

He made his last Low-A series count, going 6-for-17 (.353). Of these six hits, two were home runs and one was a triple.

Josenberger also had four walks to just two strikeouts and stole two bases. He now heads to Bowie sporting a .749 OPS that is far better than his first few weeks.

On the mound, this week’s honor goes to Edgar Portes and his incredible bounce-back outing. Last time out, Portes got shelled for five runs. This time around, that wouldn’t matter.

In his outing that earned him the win, Portes didn’t allow any runs on just two hits. This outing also saw six strikeouts, his most since June 12 when he fanned seven. It was Portes’ fifth win, as well as the outing to put him over 100 strikeouts on the season.

Bowie Baysox: Noelberth Romero – UTIL / Peter Van Loon – RHP

When it came to the Baysox offense, It was difficult to stick with one name. Both Donta’ Williams and Samuel Basallo deserve to be put in the same mix as Romero, but we decided to go with Romero because of an incredible achievement.

Romero had both of the walk-off hits during Saturday’s doubleheader. The last time it happened in an MLB game was in 1972 when Sal Bando of the Oakland Athletics did it.

Romero had a solid week despite the two walk-offs. In five games, he slashed .333/.368/.556 with a .924 OPS and collected six hits, a double, a home run and four RBIs.

Ever since he came back from injury, Peter Van Loon has looked really good on the mound, especially in his last start, when he picked up the win while going five innings, giving up three hits, walking one batter and striking out six.

PVL has been consistently good this season. He currently has a 2.78 ERA with the Baysox and a 3.63 ERA for the season in 10 games. He has held batters to a .222 average while only walking 13 and striking out 47.

Norfolk Tides: Liván Soto – INF / Dillon Tate – RHP

Liván Soto was DFA’d by Baltimore twice this year and now finds his way back to the Birds after a recent trade with the Cincinnati Reds.

Looking to find a landing spot, Soto would slash .381/.409/.429/.838 in his first week with the Tides. This line included one RBI, one run scored and an extra-base hit.

More impressive is that in 21 at-bats, Soto struck out just once, so he is making contact and putting the ball in play, as his batting average of balls in play is .409.

A familiar face to Birdland jumps into our week, and he looks like the pitcher we all remember from 2022.

Dillon Tate, although not a prospect anymore, is working on regaining the form that made him one of the best back-end relievers in baseball, and this week, he is showcasing that talent.

Appearing in two games against the Durham Bulls, Tate would pitch two innings, allowing two hits, no walks and striking out three. Most importantly, he allowed no runs.

Since returning to Norfolk, Tate has pitched 6.1 innings and allowed one run (1.43 ERA) on a total of eight hits with one walk (0.88 WHIP), striking out six batters in the process.
