According to multiple industry sources, the Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran utility infielder J.D. Davis to a minor league deal.

While this acquisition might scratch some heads at first glance, it’s a solid signing for the team’s format. Davis can play first base, third base and the corner outfield. This season, he has already played for two other teams, the Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees, and has slashed .218/.293/.338 with a .631 OPS in 46 games.

Davis has 31 total hits, five doubles, four home runs and six RBIs on the year. The 31-year-old hit 22 home runs for the New York Mets during the 2019 season and 18 last season with the San Francisco Giants.

For his career, Davis has hit .257/.340/.425 with a .764 OPS in his eight-year career, collecting 72 home runs and 221 RBIs in 640 games. He was selected in the third round by the Houston Astros in the 2014 MLB Draft out of Cal State.

While the move is based on a minor league deal, don’t be surprised if we see him make the big league roster at some point, especially with all the unfortunate circumstances the Orioles have been dealing with due to the injury bug.

With that said, Davis is a player who deserves that chance if the opportunity opens up at the third base position. For right now, it looks like Elk Grove, California, native is headed to play for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides.

Just stop it. This guy is 3 years past his expiration date. I don’t understand the Oriole front office at all. Their decisions are truly puzzling. He can play 1st, 3rd and DH? So can I. Sign me!
