Cash considerations are on the move again, as the Baltimore Orioles have acquired right-hander Colin Selby from the Kanas City Royals.

Selby, 26, was originally drafted out of Randolph-Macon College by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 16th round of the Amateur Player Draft in 2018.

During his minor league career, Selby accumulated a 14-12 record across 136 games (29 starts), posting a 3.65 ERA across 283.1 innings pitched. He has a career 1.21 WHIP and a .209 batting average against, striking out 306 and walking only 125 batters.

Selby made his major league debut in August of 2023. He would appear in 21 games (five starts) posting a 2-2 record with an ERA of 9.00 across 24 innings of work. He collected three holds and failed to convert any of his three save opportunities. The upside was that he struck out 30 batters while walking only 15.

In April of this year, Selby was traded to the Kanas City Royals for left-hander Connor Oliver, when he was assigned to the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate, the Omaha Storm Chasers.

By the end of April, Selby found himself back in the bigs for the Royals. He would appear in two games, covering three innings. He walked two, struck out none and held opponents to a .186 average.

Selby was sent back down to the minors, where he has gone 2-2 across 18 games with three holds and a blown save. He has pitched 20 innings, holding opponents to a .216 average with a 1.21 WHIP.

After being designated for assignment by the Royals on July 6, the Orioles would claim Selby on July 11 and add him to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides roster.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Orioles have moved right-hander Kyle Bradish (Tommy John Surgery) to the 60-day injured list.

We would like to welcome Colin Selby to the Baltimore Orioles organization.

One response to “O’s add pitching depth, acquire right-hander Colin Selby”

  1. Just what we need, another reliever that can’t get through a clean inning. 2 walks in 3 innings the last time up. I thought we were going for qualiity. Thought we were past just filling the staff with depth no matter the quality
