The final game of June did not go well for the Orioles, as they lost on national television, but the day was also somber for Gunnar Henderson.
The Orioles’ star shortstop’s 36-game on-base streak ended after Henderson went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in the 11-2 loss to the Texas Rangers.
It was a streak that started on May 22, when the Orioles lost 5-4 to the St. Louis Cardinals. Although on that day the Orioles’ sweepless streak ended, we saw the start of another impressive streak.
In the 36 games, Henderson slashed .326/.441/.631 with a 1.072 OPS, collecting 46 hits, 13 doubles, 10 home runs and 24 RBIs. Henderson also walked 28 times and was hit once by a pitch. Ultimately, the now-23-year-old helped the Orioles go 23-13 during the streak in games that he played.
When taking a more extensive look at Henderson’s streak, you realize that the 162-game pace looks like this: 207 hits, 58 doubles and 45 home runs with 108 RBIs and 126 walks.
For context, that is considered Juan-Soto-type numbers. If Henderson gets back on that track more often, his AL MVP chances will be highly increased.
The streak also really helped Henderson increase his seasonal numbers, as his average went up .23 points, his OBP up .39 points, his slugging up .07 points and his OPS up .46 points.
All of those facts helped Henderson move forward to phase two of All-Star voting, where he is currently up for the starting shortstop spot for the American League.
With all this said, we knew before this streak that Henderson was special. However, this impressive feat just showed that he can get on-base and be effective in a plethora of ways.
While the streak died, there is still plenty of time for a new one to begin. Whether that happens or not, Henderson has proven himself this season to be one of baseball’s best and should be highly considered for the AL MVP honor.
