According to multiple industry sources, the Orioles are expected to sign first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper to a minor league deal.
Cooper is now on his third organization of the 2024 season, spending time with the Chicago Cubs, who he broke camp with out of spring training, and Boston Red Sox, who designated him for assignment last week.
In 36 games this season, the 33-year-old has slashed .206/.267/.299 with an OPS of .566. Of his 22 hits, seven have been for extra bases, as the California native has collected 11 RBIs.
In his eight-year professional career, Cooper has collected 57 home runs and 233 RBIs over 517 games. He’s a career .265/.333/.427 hitter.
Cooper, who’s a former All-Star, will presumably head to Triple-A Norfolk to work on his swing and timing. With Ryan Mountcastle, Ryan O’Hearn, Heston Kjerstad and Anthony Santander all major factors in the O’s lineup, the path for Cooper to see the big leagues seems to be narrow.
