The Orioles have players who explode through a series or two and then can turn around and be as cold as ice on an igloo in the middle of Antarctica.
On the same spectrum, there are also players who would just like to forget a certain set of games, or even a week is worth forgetting about.
In this new series, we will look at the players who had a great week, a good week and one player who would like to forget that this week even existed.
The Orioles are coming off a series against two West Coast teams, the Los Angels Angels and the Oakland Athletics, in which they went 3-3, winning one series on the road (Angels) and losing one at home (Athletics).
Let’s see who makes our list this week and dive right in.
The Great: Adley Rutschman – C
In the midst of a nine-game hitting streak with 11 multi-hit games this month, Adley Rutschman is showing why he is the best catcher in the game.
In the last two series combined, Rutschman would go 10-for-26 with two home runs, three runs scored and seven driven in while totaling 17 total bases.
For the season, the team leader is slashing .318/.361/.455/.816 with four home runs, 17 RBIs, 35 hits and 17 runs scored across 26 games.
The Good: Cole Irvin – LHP
With his time as a starter probably coming to an end, Cole Irvin saved his best for his last two outings.
Irvin would go 2-0 over the last two series, combining for 13.2 innings, allowing eight hits, two walks and seven strikeouts while yielding no runs.
Irvin is now 2-1 with a 3.49 ERA across five games, totaling 28.1 innings. He has yielded opponents to a .259 batting average while striking out 18 to just seven walks and compiling a 1.24 WHIP.
The Ugly: Colton Cowser – OF
After a torching start to his season, Colton Cowser has cooled off rather quickly.
Over the last two series, Cowser combined to go 3-for-20 (.150 avg). Though he did have a home run and two RBIs and walked four times, Cowser struck out 10 times, including multiple times in three of the games.
Cowser is still having a strong season, as he is slashing .310/.375/.663/1.037 with six home runs and 18 RBIs. He has 22 hits across 26 games with 11 runs scored and three stolen bases.
Based on how Cowser’s season has gone, it’s just a matter of time before he turns it around.
Of course, we want all our team to be overly successful, but the reality is that there will be ups and downs all season. As easy as it is to go into a slump, it’s just as easy to come out of one.
The Yankees and Reds are on the slate for this week, we will see who makes next week’s list and if Cowser can turn things around.
