According to MLB Insider Jon Heyman, the Orioles have signed former All-Star and veteran right-hander Julio Teherán to a minor league deal, with an invite to big league camp.
Teherán spent last season pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers. He’s most known for his nine years with the Atlanta Braves as their ace, but the native of Colombia has also spent time with the Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers.
The 33-year-old right-hander appeared in 14 games, 11 starts for the Brewers in 2023. He went 3-5 with a 4.40 ERA across 71.2 innings, struck out 50 and walked 13, as opponents hit .254 against Teherán, who had a 1.13 WHIP.
For his career, Teherán is 81-82 across 254 games and 247 starts. He has amassed a 3.83 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP while holding opponents to a .238 average.
Teherán pitched one game for the Tigers in 2021 before being shut down for the season with a shoulder strain. He elected free agency and pitched in independent ball and the minors, waiting for an opportunity to return to the bigs.
Teherán is no stranger to being a leader, as he made six Opening Day starts with the Braves from 2011-2019.
Looking for depth, as Ben McDonald says, you can never have too much pitching. If he makes the team, Teherán will earn $2 million with a $100,000 signing bonus and opt-out.
With a few weeks until the start of the 2024 regular season, Teherán will have his work cut out for him to catch up. His presence and veteran leadership will provide the younger players with another brain to pick.
Teherán will have every opportunity to make the big league club, however, due to the early absences of Kyle Bradish and John Means. He could earn a spot as the fifth starter in the O’s rotation or even make the team as a long reliever out of the bullpen.
