The depth just keeps growing in Baltimore, as the Orioles have claimed infielder Liván Soto off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. Heading into the 2023 season, Soto was ranked 16th on the Angels’ top 30 prospects list.
Soto has had a short but successful major league career thus far. After debuting for the Halos in 2022, Soto has been a contact-heavy hitter in 22 games. Slashing a career line of .375/.414/.531 with a .946 OPS, Soto has tallied 24 hits in 64 at-bats and has hit five doubles, one triple and one home run.
Over the past three years, he has made 1,470 trips to the plate in the minor leagues. He drew walks in 12% of those at-bats and hit 22 home runs, leading to a combined slash line of .247/.341/.356.
Soto, 23, is a nice depth piece for the Orioles and is someone who should be looked out for during spring training. O’s GM Mike Elias has done a fantastic job recently with grabbing multiple depth pieces like Soto, as he acquired utility player Nick Maton from the Detroit Tigers a day earlier.
Soto will fight for a role on the big league club alongside players like Maton, Jackson Holliday and Connor Norby but is most likely going to start the season at Triple-A Norfolk.
With the acquisition of Soto, the O’s 40-man roster is now full.
Welcome to Birdland, Liván Soto!
