Once again, Orioles GM Mike Elias has quietly been looking for more talent and has acquired another young player with strong upside.

It was announced that the Orioles have acquired utility player Nick Maton from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for cash considerations.

Originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2017, it wasn’t until April of 2021 that Maton would make his big league debut. He would play 52 games in 2021 and 35 in 2022.

His 2022 season saw Maton accumulate a career-best .855 OPS, as eight of his 18 hits went for extra bases in his 35 games. His season was cut short due to a shoulder injury.

Maton would be traded to the Tigers, along with Matt Vierling and Donny Sands, in a deal that saw Gregory Soto and Kody Clemons head to Philly.

Detroit gave Maton a bigger role, as he would play 93 games last season. The Illinois native would slash .173/.288/.305, setting career-highs in most offensive categories, including home runs (8), RBIs (32), hits (43), runs (29) and walks (38).

Able to play the corner outfield spots, Maton has also played second, short and third base. The lefty-hitting soon-to-be 27-year-old will have a chance to provide depth and will be another multi-positional benefit to the team.

Nick’s brother Phil was just signed by the Tampa Bay Rays this week, so that means we could possibly see a brother vs. brother matchup sometime this season, if we’re lucky.

We would like to welcome Nick Maton to Birdland!
