The final awards show for the 2023 MLB season, the All-MLB team selection show, took place Saturday night. For the Orioles, three players were nominated: Adley Rutschman, Félix Bautista and Kyle Bradish.
Bradish brought home a Second Team All-MLB selection to honor his breakout 2023 campaign.
The 27-year-old budding star ended the season with MLB’s fourth best ERA (2.83), the seventh best batting average against (.215) and tied for the league’s third best WHIP (1.04).
Bradish made incredible strides in his first full season in 2023, and it is expected that he makes even more in 2024.
As more of an unexpected selection, but nonetheless still as amazing, is Rutschman being named First Team All-MLB for the catcher position.
Also his first full season in the majors, Rutschman made great strides in 2023. It was known from his time in his rookie year in 2022 that the Orioles’ backstop was amongst the best in the league. Number 35’s season in 2023 only confirmed that he truly is the best.
Offensively, there is no better catcher. He hit safely 163 times while adding a whopping 92 walks to his resume. This past season saw 20 home runs for the young catcher to go alongside 31 doubles and one triple.
For Rutschman to end with 256 total bases while totaling 92 walks goes to prove the danger he poses to opposing pitching staffs.
On the defensive side, there simply aren’t numbers existent to show how valuable Rutschman was to the Orioles. What he was able to do with that pitching staff was evident from game one all the way to 162.
Finally, Félix Bautista brought home a First Team All-MLB selection for relief pitchers. Again, no surprise at all for the 2023 AL Reliever of the Year.
Bautista’s 2023 season was one of legend. Unfortunately, it was cut short on August 23, but winning this award goes to show how truly amazing he was up to that point.
The first-time All-Star was simply the most dominant pitcher in baseball. The mixture of a 100 mph fastball with that devastating splitter had offenses looking silly all season long. Bautista finished with a 1.48 ERA and a 3.0 bWAR as a closer.
His 61 innings saw 110 strikeouts, a WHIP of 0.918 and a FIP of 1.88. That was good for an ERA+ of 280, which, for reference, is more than twice as good as AL CY Young winner Gerrit Cole’s 165.
We want to send our congratulations to Bradish, Rutschman and Bautista on these incredible honors.
