According to industry sources, the Orioles have signed left-handed pitcher Jakob Hernandez to a minor league deal.
Hernandez was drafted in the 21st round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies out of the University of Texas, where he collected a 3.28 ERA in 13 starts and 79.2 innings pitched.
The now 27-year-old would make his professional debut in 2017 at Rookie Ball and would be big in the pen having a 1.64 ERA in nine games.
Hernandez would hit as high as Triple-A in 2021 but struggled for the next two years. He came back to his peak form in 2023 and spent all of 2023 in Triple-A, carrying a 3.52 ERA in 23 innings, 19 games.
Hernandez has a 3.16 career ERA in 206 games at the minor league level, with 343 career strikeouts to just 111 walks.
Hernandez can be a nice depth piece addition to the farm system and is a person to watch out for to make his big league debut sometime in 2024.
